The study predicts that Facebook users “show rather then tell” as they tend to be more implicit (unspoken, implied) than explicit (clear-cut, definite) when it comes to self-disclosure (Zhao, Grasmuck & Martin, 2008, p. 1816). This is also true to the social penetration framework which says that the levels of self-disclosure are dependent on the environment. The study methods involved in-depth interviews with a representative sample of 63 college students from diverse backgrounds. This group was added to an initial group of 83 students from similar backgrounds. The profile pages of the participants that used Facebook were downloaded and data was taken on specific information areas of each account (Zhao, Grasmuck & Martin, 2008, p. 1821).

When you are constantly on your computer or phone reading statuses, you are missing out of loving conversations with your family. We have to change this by setting aside time to spend with family. This change can save relationships with friends, family, and even people you barely know. I find myself not using Facebook or social media sites too often, because I do not see too much value in them, besides keeping in touch with certain family or friends. We need to apply this information about the social penetration theory, because with the constant use of social media sites, we are becoming “onions” that have these layers of security. If this use of social media continues at this level, communicating in person will be obsolete in the future. That is not something that I personally would enjoy, because it takes away the whole aspect of body language and facial expressions that can change a conversation for the better or even
