In this prosperous and technologically advanced age, social media has become a common program most people, typically younger generations, now use universally. With over a billion users registered and actively using these services, it has become an integral part of modern society. Some people might argue that social media is a negative influence that consumes the best aspects of lives. Social media has created an imbalance in the harmony of society and pose as a threat, such as cyber bullying and social repression. However, social media itself is an amazing program that lets people connect with friends, share moments, and publicize their work to the whole world. It is a fundamental part in society, without communication nothing would progress to its full potential, or even progress at all. Social media changed how people communicated with each other, making it far easier than previous methods of communication. Giving simple features such as, instant messaging and simple graphical interfaces that lets the users navigate the service with ease. Humans used to not be able to receive messages instantaneously from far away distances; using letters that takes weeks or months to arrive to the receiver or using bulky radio transmitters that has a limited range. In today’s era, we can receive messages instantaneously, just as fast as snapping a finger; through social media it has become a possibility to connect with friends and family without the extensive wait. One of its downsides is cyberbullying; a person or a group of people discouraging, teasing or even threatening another person. Social media may sometimes give encouragement and pride to a person but, people may over exert their freedom of speech and discourage the individual. Cyberbullying has become a serious offence because of multiple suicidal attempts or even acts that have been committed for the past few years. According to a statistical report on dosomething.org, an organization that runs campaigns dedicated to improve society, claims that Bullying victims are 2 to 9 times more likely to consider committing suicide (11 Facts About Cyber Bullying par. 10). This can be prevented however by simply not using the service or not caring what other people might think of yourself. Ignoring every negative remarks the individual may receive. Another downside to social media is the chance of having your identity being stolen and used for malicious reasons. This situation can also be avoided by not letting delicate information such as your address be shared on the social networking service. Social media has become a common system for people to connect in today’s generation. Making people’s way of communication to each other effortless, even older generations started to embrace the features social media has to offer.
