In the book Women in Popular Culture, it say “They appear in multiple, often contradictory roles, their representations fractured and framed by conflicting depictions indicative of the ideological struggles over who they are and what their futures can be” ( Meyers, 19). Society practically makes a picture for the world to view women in popular culture. They do not take the time to understand where and who a person comes from before they stereotype them. When someone advertises, they have an explanation behind why they are doing what they are doing and why they picked a certain image to use. A lot of people do not understand the reasoning behind women who are in advertisement with or without clothes. “A magazine advertisement for shoes, curiously enough, does not show a shoe at all…. “Society tries to shape and form a person’s identity, whereas, identity is the heart of humanity and when it is taken away from people or is transformed into a something else, their humanity is subsequently stripped from them” ( Chapman,1). The effects that usually occur when women are being destroyed on social media is violence or death. Women use alcohol or suicide attempts as an escape from what society has stereotyped them to be rather than embrace who they truly are. Does society take into heed of how their comments can affect someone and destroy a person is several ways? No, the comments and opinions that society makes can lead to serious issues with women such as; suicide, eating disorders and depression. Society does not contemplate how people can be affected by the things they put on social media daily. Mass media is especially harmful to women because it constructs negative perceptions of women and reinforces them on a daily basis.
On social media women are already bashed by people’s opinions and comments indirectly but then there’s women who are involved in cyberbullying. Cyberbullying is an electronic harassment or online aggression, is an emerging public health concern that has been associated with multiple serious negative consequences. The percentage of women and girls that are cyberbullied is fairly high. Women nor girls take crucial comments very well as others.
