Human beings have eternally been built for connection. Throughout our time, the growth and demise of different civilizations, we’ve always been apart of a greater group, family, or community that has not allowed us to be lonely singularities. Simultaneously, philosophers have also emphasized to us the importance and value of independent thinking and meaningful solitude. To hold oneself apart from society, is to begin to think one 's way beyond it. In the today that we live in, we tend to beg for validation from anyone and everyone who may offer- family, friend, lovers- and in recent decades, we’ve extended our efforts to acquaintances, friends of friends, and not uncommonly- total strangers. Social media (SM) was created in mind of being …show more content…
The rapid pace of life imposes detachment from nature, family, friends and society. Individuals who don’t agree with the established, accepted ways of behavior are labeled as ‘crazies’ and lonely. On the flip side, the lack of basic security for material and psychological survival is forcing people to integrate into the conformist sense of false, virtual integration. SM creates an illusion of human adaptation. When casual use of this technology morphs into addiction, people cannot connect with their loved ones or themselves. In the past, individuals willingly isolated themselves from their community with the intent to reflect and grow without distraction. Today, we isolate ourselves because of imaginary benefits of online socialization, empty vanity, self love, and convenience. It’s hard for people to be independent from the inert state of …show more content…
It was found that social anxiety significantly predicted problematic Facebook use. While the study showed positive correlation between social anxiety and problematic Facebook use was significant for high and medium NSAs but not for low NSAs. By specifying NSA- Needing social assurance, (the desire to sustain a sense of belonging by seeking companionship and affiliation with the motive to pursue social interactions with others- and the attempt to resolve tension through communication channels perceived as comfortable and effective for satisfying one’s psychological needs.)(Lee-Won) This study shows that people are more likely to use Facebook excessively when they feel less comfortable stepping out in the tangible social scene. This era of over-sharing encourages the quiet to blend in, so they end up spending more time on Facebook and other SM outlets when compared to confident individuals. Shy people think they are fulfilling their needs for interaction through their social media screens, in truth they use these methods to keep avoiding the all important eye contact. It’s ironic to me that Facebook’s creator, Mark Zuckerberg, is noticeably anxious during interviews, but created a networking platform that encourages people to share almost every intimate detail of their lives. The initial impression is that this technology has turned them into social

The Loneliness of the Interconnected is an essay on how the internet has made it easier for people to become isolated, while being in the midst of everything. The author, Charles Seife, proposes that humans have strong mental foundations based on opinions we form throughout our lives. We were once a communal species, hunting, gathering, and foraging for the benefit of ourselves and those around us. Although we moved away from a society formed on the mutual needs for survival we continue the practice of asking our neighbors for help when we are knees deep in a cookie recipe, stranded without eggs. However even this once commonplace practice of neighborly interaction is developing into a thing of the past, a mindset derived on mutual need has devolved into one centered solely on each individual. Our “We” mentality has been transfigured into a mindset precariously fixated on “me and mine”. As technology continues to develop, we dive deeper into the abyss of apathetic behavior, favoring a conversation through text than face to face human interaction, or liking a picture of a newborn on Facebook instead of holding that newborn in person.…

The study of the good life put’s prominence on finding our own individual path to happiness, while at the same time, being able to be aware of our surroundings. Human beings are adaptive creatures, meaning we unconsciously “fit in” with the culture we abide in. However, at what point does the pursuit of one’s good life become an extension of societies suggestions? In Clive Thompson’s article “I 'm So Totally, Digitally Close to You”, he describes a modern society that has conformed to the hands of social media, and as a result has suppressed creativity and individuality. However, when we look at Sophocles Antigone, Creon and Antigone possess two separate mindsets on what they believe to be right, and essentially Creon’s stubbornness and the…

Is Facebook Really Changing Our Society? In his essay “Faux Friendship”, William Deresiewicz discusses the impact of social-networking websites on how modern society perceives friendship. Deresiewicz argues that websites such as Facebook convey a false sense of connection and extinguish the intimacy that composes a true friendship. He also claims that the dynamics of Facebook leave no room for deep conversations, and concludes by claiming that the online social media imported the principles of professional networking to interpersonal human relations, damaging their personal nature.…

After writing mostly about the bad aspects of Facebook, Marche tells us that it is not just the fault of the people who invented social media sites, it is also mostly our fault as well. Moira Burke, a recent graduate student “…concluded that the effect of Facebook depends on what we bring to it.” (pg.10). Social media sites were intended to bring people together, but it has caused us to grow farther apart.…

In the article “ Is Facebook making us lonely?” Stephen Marche provides an eye-opening piece stating the long term effects that the internet and social media portrays on the human mind and body. He provides statistics and examples of how the internet can affect our health, however these health concerns may only be affecting you because you have let them. Findings suggested while self-esteem had an influence on compulsive social media use (p< .05), interaction anxiousness was also a significant factor (p< .01), influencing excessive social media use (Aladwani & Almarzouq, 2016). These results suggest individuals with low self-esteem and high interaction anxiousness might find social networking sites an accessible means through which they can overcome many negative emotions and unconstructive feelings they experienced in social situations (Aladwani & Almarzouq, 2016). Moreover, after carefully evaluating data obtained from their own research, Andreassen et al. (2012), further supported the previous study outcomes and suggested anxious and shy individuals are more likely to use social media to interact with others rather than face-to-face because it allows more time for planning and control over self-presentation (Andreassen et al., 2012). The researchers concluded neuroticism and extraversion are positively related to high scores in the Bergen Facebook Addiction Scale (Andreassen et al.,…

The researcher may define feelings of loneliness differently than the person being surveyed. Matter says she believes that the rise in social disconnection, however, is real and due to the rise of individualistic culture and, ironically, social media. Modern societies, such as America, culturally push making it on your own with limited help, as opposed to a collectivist society which prioritizes groups. This, paired with the rising dependency on social media to establish relationships as opposed to face to face communication, has led to difficulty to have meaningful social…

People who don’t feel like they are expected in their everyday life turn to facebook to find friends and to always feel like they are accepted. The source was good about including the other opinion as well. It talked about that maybe there is an overuse of technology because it provides a channel for those with social anxiety disorder to communicate with others. I used this source to show that using technology too much has a negative impact on self esteem and many other factors.…

Social network sites have people feel infatuated with the fact that they can change who they are at the very tip of their finger, but at what cost? The enhancement of one’s personality could eventually harm the idea of having friends and can hurt communities throughout the world. Many might figure that this was simply an unintended consequence of the social network phenomenon however, it has evidently caused misconceptions of who you are actually socializing with online. It is true, tweeting and updating your Facebook account is addicting, I find myself altering and being careful of what I post on my social media accounts in order to live up to the unspoken standards of being socially connected. It was as if I posted what I felt my friends and followers wanted to hear, rather than present who I really was because, I did not want to come across as boring.…

It has become a serious problem and it happens more and more each day as technology continues to advance. The interactions with others, behaviour, and personal health, all have been affected because of the distractedness of social media. In the journal article Distracted by Raymond Gozzi, he mentions why teens use electronic devices: “They use electronic contracts to avoid face-to-face interactions. It is easier to text someone a short message, and get texts back, than to actually talk to them” (Gozzi 111). Through the use of social media, people can pick and choose what they want to involve themselves in, whether it be conversations, events, etc. By avoiding face-to-face interactions, they begin to lack the social skills necessary in life.…
