The Impact of Social Media on Society Is the effect of Social Media on society really that great? The truth is, Social Media plays a huge role in today’s society and impacts it greatly. Social Media affects society positively because it unites people together for a common goal and it has the ability to create positive outcomes. It can also rally people for a cause, and it inspires mass movements for positive social change.

A current trend in the group known as “BLM” or “Black Lives Matter” was started as a simple hashtag on social media. The BLM group is rallied online by starting and participating in protests. Black Lives Matter has used social media as a tool to make awareness for their cause and did so by gathering others to rally. Politicians use social media to advertise their campaign and to rally their supporters when making a point. Politicians do this on social media to spread publicity, this helps bring their supporters together to rally for a common cause ( “The Impact of Social Media on Society”). Social media has its online dangers that the individual must be aware of. Social media used negativity can cause a decline in productivity. For example, “Studies show that British companies have lost billions of dollars per year in productivity because of social media addiction among employees.” (Ta). Social media in a workplace can be dangerous to productivity levels. To prevent this, Jenny says, “Many companies have blocked social networks on their office Internet as addicted employees can distract themselves on such sites, instead of focusing on work.” (Ta). This shows that companies are aware of these dangers and are doing everything they can to prevent them.
