We need to pay more attention to social media justice because it has the power to sway the view of the actual justice system. Take a look at the controversial subject of Walter Palmer and Cecil the lion. Walter was a member of the “Wildlife Conservation Club” Safari Club International (SCI). Who state they are “Dedicated” to wildlife conservation, which has proven to be untrue. “Wildlife conservation could not be further from the truth of what SCI does. In fact, SCI’s activities – both in the wild and on Capitol Hill – have had a destructive impact on wildlife and wildlife policies on the state, federal and even international level.” (Loki) The Media skipped that point, they just made it look like Mr. Palmer did this out of sport. When someone watches it, they form an opinion about if Avery is “innocent” or “Guilty”. “After losing several appeals, a petition for DNA testing was granted in 1995 and showed that scrapings taken of Beernsten’s fingernails contained the DNA of an unknown person. The tests were unable to eliminate Avery, however, and a motion for a new trial was denied.” (Innocence Project) This outraged people, they stormed to social media saying that he was mistreated, and the justice system failed him. Prompting a new investigation into his case, he obtained a new lawyer who has a record for having wrongful convictions overturned. People started a petition on change.org to “Free Steven Avery” it has a little over half a million signatures. The twitter-verse had a feeding frenzy, with all the self-taught law “professionals” weighing in with what “should” happen. This could change Avery’s life for the better.
