Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes in 2004. They originally intended for it to be a college social network, but now anyone over the age of thirteen can join. There are many different things that Facebook users can do. They can create a personal profile, promote themselves or their business, view other profiles, add or remove others as “Friends”, and exchange e-mails. They can also play games, follow a favorite musical band, movie star, or sports team. It is now the largest online social networking site that allows users to join different groups and share information, photos, videos and exchange emails with each other very easily. Facebook had over 1.59 billion monthly active users as of August 2015. Because of the large volume of data users submit to the service, Facebook has come under scrutiny for the effect social media is having in the workplace.
There are many different kinds of online social networking platforms and sites. Sites like Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, and Instagram have become an important part in the everyday lives of many people. Roughly speaking, they aim to build social networks and relationships among people and promote the idea of self-expression, interaction and sharing between people through the online platform. Given the huge number of users, such platforms have become today’s “water coolers” for individuals at work.
