Control can be described as being able to manipulate and decide what happens on the screen of your digital device. On the other hand, flow is said to be getting the right feeling between tasks that are complicated to solve and those that are just uninteresting to engage with. (Kerr, Kücklich, & Brereton, 2006) Narrative is also an important part in new media where the narration of the characters in video games are part of the story that will draw the audience in. The narration in a game is a medium of storytelling that has one hurdle to overcome, interactivity. “Video games are the medium with the most untapped potential when it comes to storytelling.” (Parker, 2009) Unlike traditional media, where the creator can choose the content to be presented to the viewer, video game developers have to constantly think about how the players will react to a certain aspect of the game like the storyline or how the character is portrayed. Lastly, is intertextuality in new media. Intertextuality is the appreciation of TV shows, films, novels and more. It also exists in new media however, it is not as pleasure centred. Living in the digital age where information can be accessed easily, society are slowly educating themselves. They are becoming more aware of global issues, becoming more culturally sensitive and learn that there is more to what is only the tip of the iceberg. New media is changing the way society think and behave. As human beings, it is natural to think only of oneself, but because of how fast news spread and trends start, information about diseases, natural disasters and even wars are spread along with it. Take the ASL Ice Bucket Challenge for instance. The challenge is either to donate $100 to charity or thrown a bucket of ice water on themselves. (Roesler, 2014) Although, people only wanted to watch their friends squirm under the cold water, the campaign managed to raise a lot of awareness. They are slowly manipulated into spreading the challenge without even realising that it is changing the way they think and behave. The idea of the challenge is so fun, they just jump onto the bandwagon to join the rest. Of course not many took the initiative to learn more about ASL but it did raise concerns about the disease and the issues that they face.
