Social media is a huge part of people’s daily lives, considering it is easily accessible on mobile or other technological devices. Since the emergence of the Internet, social media has emerged for people to share their lives, ideas, thoughts and other aspects of their lives to others in a public forum. Due to the fact that social media is also used as a widespread platform for news, gossip, and other forms of media, people can also easily access countless types of sources at their disposal. Although some might see this easy access as beneficial and convenient, individuals can be urged to compare themselves to others that can negatively affect them psychologically.

According to a recent article in CNN, there was a research study conducted by a nonprofit child advocacy group called Common Sense Media conducted a research study on social media plays a role in the social and emotional lives of US teens. The article states that “one in five teens said social media makes them feel more confident, compared with 4% who said it makes them feel less so.” Common Sense Media’s director of digital media, Shira Lee Katz, states that the teens “believe that social media helps their friendships, makes them feel more outgoing and gives them confidence." Another example of how social media can benefit people is with the maintaining of relationships. According to an article of the Huffington Post by Natasha Koifman, she states “Facebook gives you the opportunity to maintain relationships with friends and family, regardless of distance.” Why social media is efficient at times because it is a outlet for people to use for self-expression. We can be able to show people their qualities, experiences, thoughts, feelings and ideas. In that way, it gives others a sense of what people are like and that creates relationships and maintains them at the same time.
