What would life be without social media? Currently, we have sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, and Instagram where you can message old buddies or family members you don’t see as much. Social networks like these are supposed to make us feel more connected than ever. But is social media depriving us of getting out and socializing face to face with one another? Is social media making us feel more alone? Things constantly change day to day, the world itself changes and everything becomes more advanced. The sole purpose for any invention is to make life easier for us and for convenience. Social media has to be one of the greatest inventions to date. It’s here to connect us more than ever. A lot of people can’t go 5 minutes without checking Facebook for the latest updates. Cases like these I would consider the person to have what I call “FOMO”, Fear of Missing Out. A study done by CNBC found that 54% of millennials said they experience FOMO if they aren’t checking social networks. The problem I find with social media is the fact that people only share good things about their lives. We constantly feel the need to be perfect and put on a show that’s not completely accurate. This prevents someone from getting to know the real you which can lead to bonds not being fully formed. Mostly not even for anything important but the most insignificant and unimportant details of info. Internet addiction is a serious problem and leads to people being anti-social. Most people would rather lay on the couch all day and twiddle with their phone, keeping up with the latest celebrity gossip. Most of the time is just not social media, it’s that they’re addicted to technology period. As much as technology serves us we need to make sure we use it wisely and effectively.
