I’m laying in my unmade bed, procrastinating on doing the piles of homework I have, scrolling and double-tapping through my Instagram feed on my phone while Facebook is pulled up on my laptop. From the other side of the room I hear my roommate say, “Why doesn’t this picture have more likes? It’s so good!”

I’ve always heard older people complaining about how our society has been brainwashed by social media, but as I sat in my bed and looked around me, I finally recognized it to be true, especially when I automatically reply,

“Yeah, I agree! I don’t get why some girls can get so many likes on a selfie, but others can only get a few on extremely artsy pictures?”

This opened my eyes to realize that what do I do in the morning right when

It’s been scientifically proven that the longer amount of time college students surf Facebook, the more they feel worse about their own lives. I personally am guilty of Facebook envy with my friend, Savannah. Savannah comes from a very wealthy family and is going to school in Hawaii. Whenever she posts new picture of her college experience, it makes me downgrade my own. But then when I talk to her and she comments on the fact that she really isn’t having the best time in Hawaii, it make me realize that she just puts on a happy face for …show more content…
I know I have been attacking social media this whole time, but why would people spend so much time on and worrying about social media, if there weren’t any pros to it? The biggest pro of social media is how in-the-loop it keeps us all with today’s hottest news. Whether it’s our high school friends currently getting accepted to their dream college, or it’s your friends getting engaged, married, or having a baby. Social media not only keeps us updated with our friend’s lives, it also keeps most people updated about what’s going on around the globe. Social media brings everyone together, and I think that’s why everybody is so obsessed with it. It makes us feel as though we’re a

The article “Head in the (Instagrammed) Clouds,” written by Isabel H. Evans, reminds us that life should not be controlled by technology. To introduce her idea, Evans talks about our necessity to get likes and shares on our posts and comments to make ourselves feel loved and warm. Next, Blackwell explained how we justify spending time plugged in because we either want to avoid doing something we don't like or we are trying to pass the time. Blackwell concludes by stating that we need to refocus our efforts on gaining accomplishments in real life that we can physically touch and see rather than attaining accomplishments through our…

Social media has come a long way since it was first introduced to the world of technology. Where would society stand without social media today? In Isabel H. Evans’ article “Head in the (Instagrammed) Clouds”, she states a common international problem: the overuse of social media. Evans indicates that online sites are a distraction and are taking over daily routine. She argues that although she uses Twitter and Facebook herself, sites like those are a waste of time.…

I personally know that Facebook does not bring anything beneficial to me, but that does not prevent me from using it. It makes me think about what I am doing with my life and sometimes decided stop using it, but other times, when I do not want to do something my first choice is scroll down Facebook to check funny videos or any new post from my friends. What I mostly notice on Facebook is that people do everything to catch someone else 's attention and this is because they do not find themselves doing anything else rather than entertain others. It is sad for me to know that the funniest people on my Facebook page are those who feel more trap to the social media and do not realize how they are isolating themselves from the outside world. As it is shown on Facebook, they seem to be the happiest people on earth, but as soon as Facebook is not part of their life anymore, they are consumed by loneliness.…

Our society places the same social standard of how many “likes” or “retweets” people should receive on their post, and once that standard is achieved, they will be in their comfort zone: the approval of others. For some people, it even matters more who likes their picture rather than how many people like it. In my 18-year-old perspective, this is why the social media addiction is self- perpetuated. Among those around me with smartphones and tablets, so many individuals seek the acknowledgment of others by the measures of what content they are posting. This need for acceptance doesn’t always reflect the lack of present friendships; rather, this could be the harmful reassurance that one’s friends approve of what it is the person is doing, which provides the person with security.…

For men, however, taking selfies can be seen as self-conceited usually since the idea of selfies is most often used by women. Men who take selfies can be made fun of as too feminine by the audience, which leads to hate comments like “omg he looks so stupid” on their pictures and discouraging users to post whatever they feel regardless of whether or not they fit into society’s ideal images. The selfie craze has definitely burgeoned in the last couple of years on Instagram, but it has also strongly been a catalyst to the gender stereotypes that are surrounding us today. On the topic of advertisements, a study was created to show that men are more likely to follow or like pictures pertaining to energy drinks and sports, while women are more likely to follow accounts about cosmetics and fashion. This specific divide in the population of Instagram users is exactly the type of thing that pulls men and women apart as two very different populations.…
