Social Media and Creating Monsters Society would like to believe that social media can be a safe place to connect with friends, upload selfies and repost quotes that are funny, but is social media really safe? Social media can be dangerous because it can lead to bullying. Social media has impacted people’s lives it can be a dangerous place where bullies can hide behind their screens. Making it difficult for victims to receive justice. Social media sites make it easier for aggressors to bully their victims by being cruel and picking on people because bullies feel they can get away with it. It is hard to track down a bully who has created a fake profile, because of this it can make it difficult to find the real person behind the screen. The online world and social media are so new and is such a big area there are really no laws for cyberbullying. With all this it can be difficult for a victim to receive justice because when it is taking into authorities hands, and trying to track down a bully can be difficult. Especially if no one knows who the bully is because they created a fake profile with a fake name and picture. It is better to educate our youth to know what to do when a cyber bullying situation arises. It can be difficult to track down a cyberbully especially if they are across the world, or even hundreds of miles away. If no one stands up to this it can lead to consequences such as suicide and depression. A video of a teen who had been a victim of cyberbullying had “sparked outrage” throughout the online world. A teen who was fifteen years old made a video on YouTube that explained how she had suffered with psychological issues and tried to kill herself a few times. The video ended with a note she held up saying “I have nobody. I need someone.”(Collier par, 11). It is difficult to believe that being bullied online, but it is real. Social media has made it easier for bullies to hide behind screens and feel powerful because they can basically get away with being a cyberbully. It is easy for them to make fake profiles and say what they want with little to no emotion on how their victims may feel. As a society we need to stand up and teach our youth how to handle cyberbullies for if they were to become victims. They need to also be able to recognize a cyberbully to stand up and help someone else who may be a victim. We as a society need to stand up and say enough is enough and help put a stop to cyberbullying on social media sites.
