Why undertake this change?
Did you know that at a minimum 180 academic hours per school year are lost due to disciplinary problems in the classroom? In addition, troubled students in the classroom cause a decline in peer standardized testing. Furthermore, students and parents lose confidence in the educational system, schools experience high turnover among teachers, and absenteeism and tardiness increases among students.
Although Hillel Torah Day School in Skokie, Illinois is known for its academic excellence, like most schools in the country, middle school students challenge the authority of the teaching staff. Social media and peers play a major role in how students conduct themselves, and some parents are unable or unwilling to redirect their child’s behavior. Students are entering school lacking the basic social, emotional and appropriate behavioral skills needed for academic success. Teachers express frustration with their inability to finish lessons due to disciplinary problems. My main objective for undertaking this project was to help the school meet its goal to create a climate for optimal academic, social, and emotional growth for the students. In order to accomplish this goal, teachers need to gain control of classroom management.
