Magazines are telling your children to be perfect and social media sites like YouTube; where kids ask an internet audience to tell them if they are pretty or ugly. Teenagers are turning to the internet for body image validation because they see that in a way the internet acts like a super peer which provides them a quick route to satisfy themselves and how they want others to see them. The answers and reactions from their Facebook/ Instagram peers may not be the reaction they are looking for. This in turn can cause many varied reactions within the adolescent. If it is a bad reaction this can cause anxiety, depression, eating disorders, feelings that you are not good enough; bearing in mind that these comments/posts can be vindictive, insulting, trashy and in their hundreds to thousands. This bombardment of abuse can have a bad effect on any teenage mind. On the other side if it is a good reaction with affirming, gratifying and generally positive feedback, this in turn could add to someone’s self-worth and many make them post further more daring pictures for more feedback. The main thing to remember with any social media is the tone of feedback is often varied and can turn from good to bad very quickly at the touch of a button. My target age group (14 – 18) use Social Media on a daily basis – this was a staggering 72%, or every second day being 14% 1 – 2 hours a day. The oldest group 41 – 50 had a 60% every day to 40% never used and the usage time of only 10 – 30 minutes a day. This shows that the older generation don’t hold Social Media to the same status of teenagers, and probably hold more face to face conversations/visits as their choice of communication. The current trend for adolescents is to communicate on a wider basis through Social Media and this is growing. My personal opinion is that Social Media affects teenagers today and for the future due to new applications (apps) being invented bigger and better than the last.
