The use of social media affects interpersonal relationships by; taking the importance of communication, ruining friendships/ relationships, and taking away quality family time.
The first social media website "Six Degrees" had taken off in the year 1997. It then evolved into blogs and many other things that we still use today. Social media is based off of cell phones and pretty much has taken over our younger generations. The first internet accessible cell phone became used by the public in 1996, called the pocketnet phone coming from AT&T and Unwired Planet. From 2004-2013 the ownership of cellphones in America has gone from 65% to 91%, now imagine since 2013 to today. Adults and children alike are suffering from the inability to have and sustain serious conversations face to face. The newest generation, born after the year 2000, will have been influenced the most by social media. Social media is defined simply by creating online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, etc. Currently, there are many social media outlets that are not to be trusted do to being unsafe. Youth are still developing both mentally and physically, and social media has the power to affect the way young children and teens will go about their lives now and in the future. The effects of misused social media outlets, specifically Facebook, have affected and will continue to affect children's social capabilities and psychological development unless a change is made.
