a. Social location/ pg. 3: The group memberships that people have because of their location in history.

Social location applies to the real slum dog’s video because all the families that are in this film are in the same social location. Gender, race, social class, age, ability, religion sexual orientation, education and geographic location can determine social location. All the members from the real slum dog’s video are from Dharavi, India. They all seem to be very family orientated as well. I believe that this video shows that these families have a stronger family bond and obligation to the welfare of their family unit, as apposed to Americans because of their social location. Their art is essentially materials that they produce. The slum of Dharavi produces clothes, textiles, pottery, and foods. Art is the slums include the clothes that are made because they are made with intricate beading and designs. Pottery is also an art because they can be designed however they chose, they are shaped differently, they can be colored differently, and each piece of pottery is different from the next. Baking can be considered an art because bread and pastries can be designed to look beautiful. Food is also made to look more appetizing so that people want to buy and consume them. Plus the smells of the bakery are much better than the smell of the trash surrounding the rest of the slums. Recycling can be viewed as an art because certain materials that get recycled are crafted into new things. Buildings distinguish the slum of Dharavi because they are really styled differently than anywhere else. Houses are built wherever there is space to build and often times businesses are connected to the houses. Buildings in the slums are not very sturdy and don’t have good sanitation. Garbage is stored on rooftops and toilets and water taps are shared between multiple families. From what we saw in the video there aren’t very many machines in the slums to help with production. Hairstyles, clothing and jewelry help to also distinguish the group of people that live in the slums. Little girls had their hair braided a lot. Their clothing was nothing fancy but particular to their culture. Women wore jewelry on the face including the “bindi” which is the jewel that is worn on the forehead. All of these materials contribute to distinguishing the group of people who live in the slum.

The traditional view of art has changed over time just as most things have. Naturally, the act of perception has differed opinions on what society considers as art. Dance, paintings, photography, drawings, music, literature, and sculpting, are what comes to mind when contemplating the aspects of art. The limitation to defining a word so opinionated leaves out room for self-expression. The traditional ideas of what is considered art should be broadened; granted, although not tangible, art can be seen through ambitions, emotions, and expression through appearances when not limited to the customary definition.…

Social networking is the expansion of social contacts by making connections through individuals, and the two well-known types of capitals are bonding capital and bridging capital. The linkages of the two capitals have a massive influence on immigrants to communicate and be affiliated to the community. For instance when a group of individuals from one culture associate with other immigrants from another culture and “involve relationships beyond a tight-knit community, it’s likely to promote a sense of belonging to the larger society” (Pearce, 2008). In contrast if immigrants only interact with people from their own culture they most likely will not be aware of the larger society, which can reinforce the identification with the source country.…
