I am an 18-year-old Caucasian female who lives in Independence, Missouri. Due to the society, “a group of people who share a culture and a territory” (Henslin) I live in and my gender, I feel uncomfortable walking around outside at night when I am alone. Since my dad was not around most the time, by mom played both roles. She had to be a mother and teach me how to be a woman, but she also had to be the father and teach me how to be strong and hard working. She raised me to be an independent woman, and never rely on a man. In society, gender roles are still applied, but protests have been made to get rid of them. Women can be independent without a man, and I was raised and will raise my children to have the same mindset.
Social location is important for every single person. It is how a person grows, and who they grow into. It is who we are and why we do what we do in situations. I chose to use my social location positively, but it can be positive or negative. I am a white female, in a not so good neighborhood, so I learned to not be scared and learn to protect myself. Due to being middle-class, I have to work hard for everything I want or need. I am in college, and will continue to be hardworking just like my mother until the day I can no longer work.
