So one of the reasons I decided to start writing up this social justice 101 series is because of the word racism. In the dictionary, racism is defined as “Prejudice or discrimination directed against someone of a different race based on such a belief.” However within social justice and sociological circles it is understood that that is not really how racism works, and that racism is a much more insidious and deep-rooted thing than that. What many people term “racism” (or reverse-racism) is extremely different from the sociological concept of racism, or what minorities experience as racism. Calling them by the same name is demeaning to the experience that minorities have of real racism.…

As individuals it can be easy to loose hope that our contribution toward progressing the stake of youth is failing, but this is not true. Policy and legislation is the means of a collective effort of individuals who care for the welfare of our youth, who historically have been voiceless. The San Francisco Youth Commission is a program puts the concerns of the youth into public policy application. Adults collaborate with young ones and form intergenerational public policy partnerships, mobilizing for civic rights at the national level; educational reform at the state level; and housing and environmental justice at the local level. Civically engaging the youth at the municipal level can increase their investment in their community, teach them democracy and enforce their agency for change in a healthy manner, as Victor Rios encourages, “ Embracing the positive aspects of resistance, teaching young people how to use it to navigate mainstream institutions…are endeavors we must take if we are to dismantle punitive social control and help young people who society has rendered as risks, threats, and criminals become productive citizens.”…

Watching presentations and hearing stories from individuals in high school from a young age (who were at the time active National Honor Society members), inspired the archetype that I aspired to be –the archetype of an individual who shares the four characteristics that National Honor Society stands for: scholarship, service, leadership and character. Throughout my high school career, I worked towards the scholarship aspect. Despite where I am currently, my freshman year had not gone as well as I hoped it would.…

In “The Matter of Black Lives,” Jelani Cobb (2016) states evidence on how social justice movements have been founded, and where they are advancing to. The Black Lives Matter movement emerged from the initiator, Alicia Garza, who posted the saying “black lives matter” in retort to the murder trial of George Zimmerman. Although, there is tension on who is known for founding the idea. The phrase then advanced into a non-democratic liberation that sheds light on the unfair racism faced towards African-American people. This effort is inclusive of working people and gender.…

No doubt we are near accomplishing the equity we have been exercising as a country, if we have not as of now accomplished it. In any case, despite what advancements we have made, the racial disparity is still a critical issue in today 's public, and it is clear when we investigate our criminal equity framework. The United States detains a larger number of individuals than any other nation on the planet, however that is just the start of our issue.…

In my understanding, social workers should have a thorough knowledge about the issue and the basic causes of the ageism, then can render better services for the service users. From the readings I understood that age, gender, disability, race and culture, sexual orientation, poverty, workload and lack of time are the major forms of subjugation that influencing elder abuse (Wwalsh et al., 2011) and therefore, social workers work should revolve around these oppression forms. Therefore, a structural social work approach is required to address the elder abuse by transforming the societal structures (Mullaly, 2010).
