Social Justice Reflective Report

Great Essays
This year, I was exposed to things I have never heard in my life. The concept of intersectionality was completely new to me, and the social justice issues had more depth and volume than it appeared from the surface. I do not want this information to go waist. With everything I have learned and with every experience I have undergone, I want to be able to apply this knowledge in my future activities or service. With my next service experience, I am coming in with prior, detailed knowledge about social justice and the impact it has on the people I am serving. During this semester, the topic of ableism connected the most with my service at the Down Syndrome of Louisville, and it gave me a different perspective. For example, the discussion we had about the proper language to use to describe someone who is able were things I never thought of and I realized that in the past I have used offensive language unintentionally. The words “crazy,” “abnormal,” and other things may sound harmless but is damaging to someone who is able. Thus, for my next service experience, I am much more careful …show more content…
They provide programs and services such as rehabilitation services and tutoring at a much less and affordable expense to meet the needs of these families. They even supply families with money to help defray the cost of surgical procedures. However, what allows them to do this comes from the money they raise. These are things that are being done right now as we speak. The money raised impacts everything they do, and this impacts their services with their members, thus to expand on this, it would be great to have more participation in their fundraisers. For instance, one of their biggest fundraisers involves their 5k Run/Walk and I would like to get a huge group of people next year to come out and run. From working behind the scenes, I am able to track where the money raised goes and it has never gone to

So one of the reasons I decided to start writing up this social justice 101 series is because of the word racism. In the dictionary, racism is defined as “Prejudice or discrimination directed against someone of a different race based on such a belief.” However within social justice and sociological circles it is understood that that is not really how racism works, and that racism is a much more insidious and deep-rooted thing than that. What many people term “racism” (or reverse-racism) is extremely different from the sociological concept of racism, or what minorities experience as racism. Calling them by the same name is demeaning to the experience that minorities have of real racism.…

Deshpande writes, “But for many students and faculty at UT, including me, maneuvering the UT campus in a wheelchair is a daily experience of stress and frustration” (Deshpande 295). This image evokes how difficult and emotionally the author and many wheelchair-bound faculty and students face daily at campus, effectively how important her argument is. Her intention is for people to be sympathetic for all disabled college members. To do this, she adds words and phrases such as; “suffer”, “discriminatory hardship”, “unequal opportunity to succeed”, and “lack of independence” (Deshpande 295). These negative words evoke the hardships disable people go through while attending or working at a college.…

Working with Survivors of Domestic Violence: The Case of Charo, is the case study this essay is based upon. I will also identify two strategies that could be implemented to address the barriers of obtaining a work visa and learning English as a second language. In addition to explaining how the two strategies would contribute to positive outcomes for clients who encounter the two barriers identified. Service with JusticeCorps is a natural fit for me, as the program synthesizes my primary interests: social justice and language. By craft, I am hyper-aware of the force of words; I want to build on my experience as a writer to use my skills in communication for the public interest. I believe that uncommon results necessitate uncommon effort, and this belief is reflected in my academic history. I know that to make an impact as a corps member, I will need to balance multiple responsibilities, and I have a history of successfully doing just that.…

Social justice is of fundamental significance to the existence and sustainable development of any political society. Social justice describes the fair distribution of goods, services, rights, and duties. Social justice does not imply absolute equality but demands that each person receive the same basic rights and unobstructed access to economic and political resources, not mediated by gender, ethnicity, level of education, economic status, or other demographic characteristics (Jimenez, 2010). China and the United States vary a great deal in culture and values. For example, collectivist China versus individualist United States, humility over self-promotion, heirachy versus authority, etc.…

“Leaning In: A Student’s Guide to Engaging Constructively with Social Justice Content” by Robin DiAngelo and Özlem Sensoy which appeared in a 2009 issue of Radical Pedagogy. In this article, DiAngelo and Sensoy inform students about the possible difficulties that can arise in an academic social justice course, and steps a student should take in to achieve in the course to gain a higher understanding of the material. DiAngelo and Sensoy tells us that it can be difficult for students to accept and understand concepts that challenge their world view. DiAngelo and Sensoy suggest that this is because students are uninformed and have strong opinions about the topics discussed within a social justice course. Never the less, it is not impossible for…

Many may argue that there is such a thing as “true” justice and that is typically what one thinks when they come across that term. It’s not till you actually sit down and think about what “true” justice means that your opinion can be altered. In my mind, true justice is when a person who has done something wrong recieves a consequence that is equal to the crime committed. When you think about it, someone may be on trial but there could be no real evidence so they rely on witnesses. The mind can be a very deceiving thing.…

Keith Jones, another individual with disabilities would go on to share a very interesting viewpoint of the education system. As an African-American, Keith described many of the unique situations he went through in his life related to his disability. This brought to light another issue where individuals with disabilities are often discriminated against by not only their disability, but also through other areas easily targeted by prejudice. Keith’s story did indeed raise another even deeper question for the audience, how do we provide an equal and positive educational experience for those with disabilities while also keeping in mind many of the already present prejudices within the world we live in? Is there a way we can help dispel many of these already horrific prejudices while also providing the best educational experience for everyone?…
