So one of the reasons I decided to start writing up this social justice 101 series is because of the word racism. In the dictionary, racism is defined as “Prejudice or discrimination directed against someone of a different race based on such a belief.” However within social justice and sociological circles it is understood that that is not really how racism works, and that racism is a much more insidious and deep-rooted thing than that. What many people term “racism” (or reverse-racism) is extremely different from the sociological concept of racism, or what minorities experience as racism. Calling them by the same name is demeaning to the experience that minorities have of real racism.…

Until recently this summer, I was sadly never a really involved member of the social justice movement. This is due to only one major reason; that all the clubs and organizations I was ever exposed to, never focused on the importance of change. I constantly heard "what wasn't right", "what wasn't fair", and "what was wrong". But never did I hear anyone speak on how to change the situation. So that became my question.…

Privilege, a priceless intangible notion that has categorized individuals as those who have and have not. Being a student at Marquette University has made this problem more evident to me on a day to day basis. Along with being a student, I am also categorized as a minority which in this school means segregation. This in one of the biggest problems that plague the campus because those who are not experiencing this problem, often times believe that it is nonexistent. In reality, racism roams freely throughout the campus and because many like myself have not inherited certain privileges we are treated with a lesser standard.…

If I was to describe social justice I would describe it as a fair way for all no matter of the circumstances. With that be said I do feel that people have taken this too far. This means that everyone should get free education, food, housing, childcare and I just do not believe in that.…

In order to effectively share my point of view on diversity and inclusion in the advertising industry, I must define what these two words are. Diversity means having a range of different thing while inclusion is the act of including. Conversely, I believe that diversity and inclusion in the advertising industry have become nothing but a misunderstood jargon. Many agencies or agency representatives are getting involved in the "lack of diversity and inclusion in the advertising industry" conversation but do they really understand the matter at hand? Being involved in these conversations, agencies feel forced to take a stride to combat the issue without taking the appropriate reason as to why they need to remedy the lack of diversity and inclusion…

As a social worker, I believe understanding cultural diversity is learning to respect different cultures. There are a variety of human societies that exist in the world which a social worker learns to embrace to be of aid to their clients. Diversity as a wide component is a tricky thing to understand because it has both negative and positive effects on society such as education, violence and employment. Research has shown a lack of unity between races, sexes, and cultures due to mistrust, stereotyping and more within-cultural conversations and language problems. It is important for a social worker to educate themselves by attending classes on culture behavior or online training courses.…

Although patients appear to be in vulnerable state, especially those cases concerning mental health, any form of social injustice and discrimination can only add to the trauma of their experience. It can even worsen their triggers because of the way they are treated. In practicing social justice, it is also important to be well educated about the cultural implications in the presentation of mental health problems and their treatment.
