Social Justice Novels: A Long Walk To Water

Improved Essays
Books are really fun to read. Some people like adventure and others like fantasy. Books bring us into a whole new world and maybe even a new universe. Some books may not take us into a new world or universe but possibly to a different part of the world with new challenges and people. Social justice novels do just that. A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park and Don’t You Dare Read this, Mrs.Dunphrey by Margaret Haddix are both great social justice novels and when put against each other both do well in telling a story and presenting challenges to be overcome by the main character(s). One of them, however, is a true story and has a very satisfying finish. A Long Walk to Water is really enjoyable for the reader to learn about the difficulties

Even though Equality has discovered his personal feelings, he still has trouble escaping the indoctrination of collectivist ideals. According to society, the whole book is a terrible sin; people cannot write, let alone one person. This law pervades the altruistic society because the World Council wants to be assured no one can put their own thoughts on paper. Equality knows writing is “base and evil. It is as if [he] were speaking alone to no ears but [his] own,” (17) which is the greatest transgression of all in his society.…

In “Making Privilege and Oppression Happen” in the book Privilege, Power, and Difference, by Allan G. Johnson, he writes how privilege is maintained by discriminating people of different categories and treating them unequally, acting act discriminatory behavior and justifying it. This can be seen in implicit bias, defined by Johnson to be unconscious discrimination. Johnson mentions an Australian study that shows white people are more likely to get a free bus ride, if in need, then people of color, even if dressed “appropriately.” To the bus driver, not giving people of color free rides, is doing the…
