The author gives a "key" evidence for the meaning of "spared injustice" privileges. For instance, a Black person is stopped by the police without due cause that a white person is not. With this instance, the privilege is in spared an injustice suffered by the person of color, but with out further benefiting from that injustice. Differently, the "unjust enrichment privileges" is the white person getting benefits from the injustice to the persons of color. For instance, since police usually focus on the Black lawbreakers, they would be less concern on the whites who do break the laws.…
In today’s society, what is actually considered systemic oppression? The actual definition of systemic oppression is something harsh, the way many people are mistreated in a systematic way depending on their social identity group. In today's world we have seen many situations involving systemic oppression. Simply looking at the case of Trayvon Martin, he was a seventeen year old who was shot and killed in Sanford Florida, simply by his appearance. ”Zimmerman shot Martin dead the night of Feb. 26 after following him for several minutes.…
So one of the reasons I decided to start writing up this social justice 101 series is because of the word racism. In the dictionary, racism is defined as “Prejudice or discrimination directed against someone of a different race based on such a belief.” However within social justice and sociological circles it is understood that that is not really how racism works, and that racism is a much more insidious and deep-rooted thing than that. What many people term “racism” (or reverse-racism) is extremely different from the sociological concept of racism, or what minorities experience as racism. Calling them by the same name is demeaning to the experience that minorities have of real racism.…
The Second Great Awakening started in 1800. Social equality in the new nation all boiled down to religion. “At the start of the Revolution the largest denominations were congregationalists (the 18th-century descendants of Puritan churches), anglicans (known after the Revolution as Episcopalians), and Quakers.” Afterwards, Methodists and Baptists were becoming the fasting-growing religions in the nation and started attempting to democratize religion. Preachers began performing traveling revivals to spread their religious message.…
The Film Higher Learning by John Singleton is entertaing yet deals with many many life and social issues. The film is about a group of college students from different countries, races and social backgrounds. These group of college students face many problems. I Think the sound and motion in the film is important because without these film elements the movie educatinal points wouldn’t be as important.…
Over the course of the semester the coursework discussed many important themes that are important to the understanding of the history of the United States from the civil war to the modern era. Many would respond with concepts that relate to their personal narrative and that of their ancestry. It might involve a sense of identity as an American, a sense of one’s place in history or it may involve the culmination of lessons learned over the course of many trials of Americans who paved the way for following generations. Moreover, the Founding Fathers, in the Declaration of Independence, suggest that life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness best express what ideals speak to the educated polity of the United States.…
Socrates, one of the most prestigious philosophers in history, argues in Crito, “Nor must one, when wronged, inflict wrong in return, as the majority believe, since one must never do wrong” (Plato, 52). That is, he believes that a person should never do harm or wrong to others. Even if that person was harmed or wronged first, he or she should never do wrong in revenge. Therefore, under this premise, Socrates concludes that he should not escape the prison because this action will wrong the law, though he is actually betrayed by the law first. However, the terms “never” and “must” make the assumption too absolute because, sometimes, committing wrongdoing in return is indeed necessary and justified, especially when targeting social injustice.…
“Violence as a way of achieving racial injustice is both impractical and immoral. Violence never brings permanent peace.” Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke those words decades ago, and although those words were spoken years ago, they still relate to today’s world. It seems that the world has transformed into this culture of hate and inequality.…
Oppression is nothing new for the history books. Since the beginning of time there has always been a way in which people classify themselves, adding or taking away value based upon certain characteristics. No matter the time period, geographical location, or political era people find a way to rank themselves, and those around them. Take for example in the Bible; the Israelites were enslaved in Egypt by the Egyptians. The only differentiating factor between these two groups of people is where they were from.…
Oppression, according to Dictionary.com, is defined as the exercise of authority/power in a burdensome, cruel, or unjust manner. Oppression can come in many forms, but the most prevalent in today’s America I economic oppression. The higher class can not only rely on the labor of those in lower classes, but control the flow of the economy through their businesses, advertising, and the media. However, while this economic oppression directly effects all types of people, those who also face racism in their life have even more barriers in the economic world.…
The Office of Social Justice and Activism wanted a new program to replace the Tunnel of Oppression since the “tunnel” was no longer allowed to be used. With their help, I created a one-week event called, Social Justice Week. Everyday a new topic was covered. We stated on Monday, March 20 with Suzanne Ashworth talking about Gender Diversity. On Tuesday, we had The Promise House, Otterbein Alumni Zach Reat, and Barbra McKenzie speaking on Poverty and Class.…
Being an American means to fight for what we perceive to be justice for all when face with a challenge that systematically affects a large portion of our population. Throughout every era of your young nation's history the American people had always had to face injustices. Although, it may have taken different shapes and forms what never changed was that we always went through with what we believed to be right and adapted to the problem at hand all for the sake of what was right. On october 24, 1929 America face the biggest economic hardship it had ever experienced, The great depression.…
I have shown that due to the fact of skin color, one is more likely to be pulled over and serve a longer sentence than that of a non-Hispanic White man. I have shown there is inequality structured within the structure. I have broken it down into three separate races describing what they are most convicted for, how long they are sentenced, and how long they serve their sentence. Racial inequality does exist. This inequality stems from the time of slavery when diversity was not accepted.…
Oppression In our world we experience, observe, challenge and even commit forms of oppression. Some may ask what oppression is, but when given an example the term is defined quickly. Others, know the definition as soon as the word is given. We see oppression and if comfortable, sometimes challenge it, but do we ever stop to truly think about why oppression is an issue in our society and how we can fix it?…
I. INTRODUCTION A. Attention Device – Do any of you know someone identifies as a LGBT? B. Tie to the Audience – Well if you do, the chances are they would tell you that sometime during their life they have personally been subjected to some form of discrimination due to their sexuality. According to HRC.org 65 percent of Americans live in places that have no laws protecting LGBT at the workplace or anywhere else for that matter. C. Credentials – Myself being part of the LGBT community I can personally attest to the difficulty that surround equality problems for LGBT.…
