The previous statistics and empirical evidence provided highlights the fact that the issues experienced by Jay, such as of substance use and abuse, homelessness, and depression are not only issues that involves him or the LGBTQ+ community. Rather these high numbers and percentages are indicators that Jay’s issues are very prevalent within our society. The Anxiety and Depression Association of American (ADAA) reported that there were 16.5 million adults, age 18 and over, diagnosed with a type of depression in 2015 (ADAA, 2016). The issue of homelessness is also a societal issue given that economic needs, political issues and calamities within families have led many to become displaced. Our government sometimes does not allocate the appropriate funds to address the problems and instead allows them to escalate. A government, like the one currently leading us which in my personal judgment, holds is biased, and is discriminative purposely fails to address issues that affect disadvantage groups such as homelessness.
