3 Social Issues
The first social issue that I will be exploring is bullying. Oxford Dictionaries (2016), states the definition of bullying as “to use superior strength or influence to intimidate (someone), typically to force him or her to do what one wants”. There are four basic types of bullying, emotional, verbal, physical, and cyber. Bullying is directly associated with competition and the need to out-perform others. This type of behavior is a primal survival instinct. Unfortunately, society, especially a capitalistic one, forces competition where success and wealth go hand in hand. With severely high housing cost and continuing raises in rents, many have no choice but to combine resources to alleviate some of the burdens that many Americans are now experiencing. Many agencies including, Housing and Urban Development (H.U.D), Veteran Affairs, and the U.S. Department of Education have increased focus to shifting aid. Furthermore, agencies continue seeking alternate solutions to overcome obstacles by decreasing the inability for low-income and stagnant income families to own homes. Having the opportunity for improved benefits that may not have previously been available, allows many groups the opportunity to get out of financial and homeless situations. This was a major issue prior to the recession and proves to be a major obstacle for individuals, increasing the probability for homelessness. Lower-income individuals are at the greatest risk for homelessness, because in the event that an individual loses their job or has a major life event, the chances to become homeless increases exponentially. Improvements with the economy and employment will aid and sustain the lower-income population from becoming homeless. According to Oxford Dictionaries (2016), the definition of human trafficking is “the illegal movement of people, typically for the purposes of forced labor or commercial sexual exploitation”. The major areas of human trafficking are domestic sex trafficking, international sex trafficking of adults and children, forced labor and domestic servitude; according to “human trafficking" (2016). Many are forced to engage in various acts by means of force, fraud, and or coercion. Non-compliance comes with severe consequences that include beatings, starvation, forced sex acts, and harsh labor, making these situations similar to being a modern-day slave. This abuse knows no age, race, sex, or origin. According to State of California Department of Justice Office of the Attorney General (2016), “Human trafficking is the world 's fastest growing criminal enterprise and is an estimated $32 billion-a-year global industry. The perpetrators of human trafficking have become more sophisticated and organized, requiring an equally sophisticated response from law enforcement and its partners to disrupt and dismantle their networks”.
