The classic novel The Outsiders written by S.E Hinton takes place in the 1960’s in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The story revolves around Ponyboy Curtis as he navigates the inequalities of societal structure; the privileged socs and the poor lower class greasers. Ponyboy and his close friends Johnny Cade, Dallas Winston or “Dally”, Keith “Two Bit” Matthews and his older brothers Sodapop and Darry. Ponyboy is caught in the middle of a feud between the two teen social classes that consequently lead to violence and death.A strong underlying theme within the novel is the natural cruelties of life and social biases. Darry sets his aspirations of a glorious college life aside to support his brothers through their teen years after the death of their parents, while the friendship of esteemed Cherry Valance and poor Ponyboy is imposed upon by the separation of their classes. However, these difficulties faced by the protagonists turns to good when Johnny loses his life heroically after running from his demons.

Pony perceives this as resentment which further damages the already tense relationship between the two. Despite a bright future ahead and a chance at a new life Darry is stuck in the lower class forever to be a greaser, despised and spat on by the upper class. On page 126 Pony explains that “The only thing keeping Darry from being a soc is us”, this is a perfect summary of the tragedy of Darry Curtis, a smart man with a chance to do great things, and have a great life, who abandons his dreams to care for his loved
