Social Issues In Social Work

The social issues I care most about are gender, and racial injustices. More specifically, I care about ending the discrimination, racism, and sexism that occurs in society. I think that these issues are more covert, and institutional. Racism and sexism exist in hiring practices, housing, education, and in politics. In addition, I think these issues have been apparent with the election. For example, Donald Trump and his supporters have demonstrated racial biases towards many minorities in this country. Furthermore, in the news lately, there has been a few police officers who have inflicted violence against minority males. Moreover, women are still obtaining less money than their male counterparts in certain jobs. I think these all are illustrations that racism, discrimination, and sexism is still current in today’s society.
How could I get involved to impact this issue is to continue to engage in discussion about these social injustices. In addition, encourage people in the social work field that I interact with to dismantle these systems. However, I think with awareness, and education these issues will be less severe over time. For example, the people involved in the black lives movement, who are peacefully protesting, are spreading this awareness of racism. In addition, I think Hillary Clinton running for president, and other females in male

I am not entirely sure on a local level how social workers have impacted society in combating injustices. I think that social workers can participate in more advocacy, and attempt to change systems that perpetuate inequalities. Furthermore, social workers who are interested in international affairs, and policy can work toward unifying society, and eradicating social injustices. In general, people in the United States can start through voting for politicians that are seeking to change institutions, and systems to become more inclusive of all

The inequalities, which prevails in America are no different then on what happened during the Civil Right’s Movement. In a debate about student sit-ins Malcom X argues the idea of black power and his frustration with white culture. In his paragraphs Malcom discusses the hypocrisy of white cultural, and one prime example is education. Lately teaching the history of slavery or other important black issues have been lacking. Social workers are often the "first responders" to social problems, which gives them a unique advantage when accessing local media and the press. This intimate knowledge of how clients are impacted by social issues allows the direct-service social worker to craft effective policy agendas, Jansson (2018). Social workers are the front line when it comes to the community social problems. If I may refer to Laura Chick, she was a model example of how social workers can be elected to serve in public office.…

A contemporary social justice issue that we, America, as whole is dealing is the immigration problem. Many people have this automatic stigma attached to non U.S. born citizens shouldn't be allowed visa or not because they could be trying to destroy America and most people put Hispanics, Muslims and etc. into that group because they are not from this country or have this certain skin tone. But me being in a interracial family (my sister and I were adopted by a Caucasian family and we are African-American) I have been able to talk to my friends and acquaintances about how not to judge people due just to their skin color and stigma put upon them.…

The NASW Code of Ethics states, “Social workers pursue social change, particularly with and on behalf of vulnerable and oppressed individuals and groups of people. Social workers' social change efforts are focused primarily on issues of poverty, unemployment, discrimination, and other forms of social injustice. These activities seek to promote sensitivity to and knowledge about oppression and cultural and ethnic diversity. Social workers strive to ensure access to needed information, services, and resources; equality of opportunity; and meaningful participation in decision making for all people” (NASW, 2017). Macro level social work empowers clients by involving them in systemic change, rather than personalized aid.…

Until recently this summer, I was sadly never a really involved member of the social justice movement. This is due to only one major reason; that all the clubs and organizations I was ever exposed to, never focused on the importance of change. I constantly heard "what wasn't right", "what wasn't fair", and "what was wrong". But never did I hear anyone speak on how to change the situation. So that became my question.…

In the field of social work, we are faced with ethical dilemmas, more often than not. These dilemmas can come from conflicts with certain social work ethics and standards such as the right to self-determination, dual relationships, or confidentiality. A social worker can even face an ethical dilemma from a conflict of morals and values that they may have with their client. I will be examining an ethical dilemma that intersects both morals and values and confidentiality. Let’s say for example a social worker has an 18 year old client who is pregnant, still living with their parents and seeking an abortion.…

I believe that everybody should be given equal opportunities, and that privileges should be earned, not handed to you. Seeing certain social groups receive privileges only because they belong to that group inspires me to become an advocate in order to make my community a fairer and more opportunistic place. Although speaking about topics of societal privileges or social injustice may arouse negative and uncomfortable feelings, it is necessary if we ever want change to occur. Bringing up issues such as racism, misogyny, heterosexism, etc. is often avoided by the majority since it doesn’t pertain to them or makes them feel accountable, which is why voicing your support for the minorities is rare but extremely important.…

Without a doubt, one of the countless contemporary issues that I would wish to address is racism. Racism has always been around, however, recently there has been plentiful of distasteful events happening. Considering that I am an African American myself, the recent events related to what happened in Charlottesville is upsetting. This reminds me of the awful history America has when it comes to racism toward minority groups. The world is a different place compared to the past and it is arguable whether it is refined or worse.…

Overall, from my perspective about social class and race will always be a issue. For instance, you may be upper class and African American or Hispanic and you’ll still somehow or some way always encounter discrimination. In this society, you have to be the social class and race society wants you to be in order to fit and evidently that’s something out of an individual control. Therefore, it will be impossible to ever demolish segregation and end discrimination no matter your social class or…

In the assessment of the strategies that have been applied in social work field instruction, there are various innovations in the instructional methods that have been noted in the current studies.
