Largely perpetuated by McCarthyism, homosexuals were targeted by police force and government agencies throughout the fifties and sixties as they were seen as a threat to national safety and American culture. Despite their persecution, in several large cities an active gay and lesbian social scene rose even as states outlawed the gathering of and sale of alcohol to homosexuals, forcing many gay bars and nightclubs to operate in secrecy. During these early years, the ‘homophile’ movement was used to describe the gay rights movement in order to focus on the emotional aspect of same-sex partnerships instead of the sexual aspect. In this manner, the movement hoped to blend in with society. The first homophile organization, The Mattachine Society, was founded in 1950 in Los Angeles by a small group of men including Harry Hay, considered to be the father of the modern gay rights movement.…

Clinton's presidency was a seemingly long hard road. During his second term as President, He was impeached due to charges of lying under oath to a grand jury and obstruction of justice. However, the real underlying reason for the impeachment was Clinton’s denial of the Lewinsky Affair. The public opinion of the Lewinsky Affair allowed the Republican party to create a political strategy to use against Clinton. “Contending that Clinton had committed perjury, Republican leaders made the affair the centerpiece of their quest to defeat Democrats in the 1998 congressional elections” (Jansson, 2012,p.398).…

Personal agency is a subject that is difficult to have an impartial or neutral position on, as it sparks a lot of controversy, due to its basis on the premise that those in the lower class are in their position by choice. J.D. Vance increasingly proves this statement through his memoir “Hillbilly Elegy”, with his focus on the Appalachian culture and their resistance to personal agency. Vance compellingly criticizes the lower class and specifically Appalachian culture and discusses that they are poor by their own choice and mindset through their learned helplessness and exploitation of the benefits that they are given as lower class citizens. Despite arguments over demographic privilege,Vance believes that his success is due to…

This policy meant that the military was not allowed to ask recruits their sexual orientation and they should not make it obvious they were gay. If it was found out that they were gay they risked being discharged from the service. They were treated unfairly just because of their sexual orientation. This alone proves that there still was not equality among all men. In Bill Chappell’s article Supreme Court declares same-sex marriage legal in all 50 states points out “Well into the 20th century, many states condemned same-sex intimacy as immoral, and homosexuality was treated as an illness”(Bill Chappell).…

The result being a discharge of thousands of men and women in the armed forces. Up until December 18, 2010 — the law prohibited extremely qualified men and women from serving in the armed forces, virtually sending a message to America stating that discrimination was acceptable. Many laws similar to this, and also the ban on same-sex marriage puts messages out there implying homosexuals don’t deserve the rights other American citizens…
