Homeless youth in Canada is an epidemic. This is a problem that too many ignore, and some have little to no education on how bad the situation really is. It’s estimated that “around 225,00 Canadian Youth are out of work or not in school, and more than 6,000 sleeping on the streets.”(Ottorino 2015) These numbers alone should be enough to generate some concern, however people online are more often than not using social media to create jokes, or to take a strong opinion on something they don’t like. The internet has brought us all close together, this has inadvertently created an environment that stimulates sensitivity to the silliest of issues, rather than the most important of issues. People love to discuss a juicy tweet, or gossip over the latest Hollywood drama, when there are serious social epidemics plaguing the youth in Canada. 225,000 youth out of work, is a serious hit to our GDP potential, and creates a burden on those working, as they have to work harder and pay more taxes and time, to support this percentage of the labor force. There are a lot more moving parts to this problem than you might expect.

Too many people are outraged by the obscenities of Hollywood’s elite. It’s time to become offended by real social issues. Issues that cost us money, which everyone should care about, even the heartless. We could be using these valuable resources for our own benefit, these kids could be doctors and nurses that take care of you in your time of need, or become an entrepreneur who turns your city around for the better, or they could even turn out to be your friend or family member. Either way, this epidemic of youth unemployment, and youth homelessness need to be fought with the same voracity people have for creating online jokes. Why not build for tomorrow, instead of joking
