Reconstruction ended well after 1877 marking the first of a pair of attempts at social equality in the US. It is bookended by the only good war that the US has been involved in that allowed the US to explode on to the world stage as a super power that is only now in its later years of dominance. In the nearly sixty-five years between the years of 1877 and 1945 the United States underwent dynamic changes in many respects. Its social framework for many of its citizens and immigrants changed radically, both in the roles that they functioned with in society but also in the changes to their political incorporation and disenfranchisement. Economically the United States was equally striking in its changes where the differences in the roles that…

This is a result of socioeconomic disparities. Due to many factors such as poverty, lack of healthcare, and poor diet, those individuals described above often have poorer health and shorter lives as they are not able to access healthcare thus leading to illnesses in which can get out of control and lead to a shorter life expectancy. Welfare assistance programs need to be reformed again, in order to make them effective. In 1996 the Welfare Reform Act was enacted and it changed the entire program for the better, but it still isn’t doing enough to prevent fraudulent behavior. The programs have become abused and need to be reformed again. America's welfare programs are tautological and repetitive. The current welfare state encourages dependence instead of lifting people out of poverty.…

Election years in the United States remind many citizens that they live in a country with a political system that allows them to vote for people that will represent them and their wishes up in Washington. Many of the issues that become the target of debate can stem from dissatisfaction with the current regime, issues that have yet to have been answered, as well as whatever else is a hot topic at the time. One election season might have the turbulent geopolitical issues of the Middle East be the hot topic while the next season might have the talk shift to a domestic issue like gun control. Due to the presence of only two major political parties in America, many of the issues, candidates, and positions get diluted into binary choices that in…

A subject that is very sensitive and also important to me is the subject of welfare. Welfare is a program that is developed as a response to the great depression and the severity of the effects that it had on everyone. During that time this program really helped a lot of people and many would say that it even saved lives but that is not the case in today’s society. As the economy has recovered tremendously from that time period the program is now being abused, lacks accountability, and has become a permanent outlet. Like anything, there is always going to be good and bad with programs or any type of assistance but there has to be policies and procedures that are strictly enforced.…

Generally, most of the women come from low income households before they become homeless. An average homeless woman is about 35 years old with at least two children (Chambers, 1999). Living in shelters or on the street is hard enough alone, but when you have to take care of children at the same time it can make it even harder. Almost 58 percent of all homeless people are African American and 29 percent are Caucasian (Chambers, 1999).…
