Social Change And Social Issues

Decent Essays
For this UCO I was supposed to learn about social change and social issues, however, what I learned is not limited to the title of the course. I learned an appreciable amount more; majority of what I learned came from the conversations held in class. From these conversations, I learned the value of compromise, open mindedness, respect, and empathy. Everyone does not have the same views as I, and I have to be open minded by listening to their opinions, and responding in a respectful manner. If both of our views get in the way of coming up with a solution, I have to be empathic,by thinking about the person and the situation. And coming up with a balanced solution that incorporates both of our views and opinions. The greatest characteristic I learned is patience; everyone is a natural born leader, but we all can not lead at once. You have to wait your turn, and your time of leadership will come. I can continue talking about what I have learned, but you’ll be reading for hours. But, note what I have learned from this course are life changing skills that will benefit me in the long run. You proposed the question “ what grade do you think you deserve for this class?”, and my response is I know I deserve an A. Which is a pretty bias answer, but what student struggling just trying to make C’s would not say they deserve an A when asked. Not trying to be arrogant or cocky, but I contributed a lot to the classroom environment, but I learned a lot from it. Despite taking 16 credit

The “Paradoxical Era”, named by policy scholar, Bruce Jansson, refers to an era in which many reforms in social welfare were enacted under President Nixon. Nixon was not known as an advocate of social reform and looked at social welfare in retrospect from a social reform standpoint. Jansson notes that the Paradoxical Era was a period of: “conflicting tendencies…a transitional era between the reformist period of the Great Society and the conservative presidency of Ronald Reagan” (Jansson). Nixon proposed a guaranteed income system, which was opposed by Liberal individuals who were in opposition. The goal of the guaranteed income system was to reduce poverty and there were two unsuccessful attempts to enact a guaranteed minimum income in the…

Personal Philosophy of the Student Affairs Field Reflecting on my personal college experience and those of my peers, I believe that the field of Student Affairs provides a unique and even essential opportunity to help shape the experience that student’s receive within the university setting. I strongly believe that students gain more from their college experience learning and growing outside of the classroom rather than inside. Self-discovery and personal exploration through extra-curricular activities and interpersonal interactions guide students through their academic careers and develop who they wish to become as an adult facing the “real world.” Student Affairs professionals help to ensure that each student begins their track to self-discovery…

One problem I learned from class, is that women are currently still face many issues that were once thought of as being resolved. Issues such as wage discrimination, job discrimination, sexualization, and violence are only a few of the many issues we are challenged with. Not only do women still deal with these issues but we also endure sexism on a day to day biases. These issues never came to my attention in my everyday life. However, through taking this class it made me socially aware of the issues that I was facing but was not conscious of.…

Being a leader takes a lot of responsibility to be able to make commands in arduous situations to create a better outcome. Being a person in a leadership role, I have felt some feelings I never want to forget, while on the other hand there are some feelings I wish I could forget. One thing that has really stuck with me after reviewing what my leadership style is that I have a genuine feeling for people and want to help people. The changes i would like to talk about have affected people all around this country. we've seen people have arguments over things that shouldn't be argued about we've seen groups turn on each other over what they think is right and we're seeing possibly the worst election year ever. But we've seen new fascinating technology being developed like rovers that NASA says may be able to land on a comet. But people have changed But not for the best and not for the worst they seem slower now like they believe anything someone with little power says we have huge groups that pay attention to this crappy election and not to what is going on in their own backyard.…

In order to analyze a social problem from the perspective of sociological, we must first understand what the sociological perspective is defined as. Leon-Guerrero (2013) states that someone using the sociological perspective observes a problem and the solution, however they do not look at it as an individual issue, better yet an issue that effect the social structures in our society. (p. 6). The sociological perspective differs from other perspectives such as policy-oriented, psychological, or criminal justice viewpoint, as sociology focuses on social phenomena. Psychological looks at individual perspectives on matters and the criminal justice viewpoint examines the nature, management, consequences, and prevention of criminal behavior.…
