Social Isolationism

As we get older one of the most common ailments we face is loneliness and social isolation. This isolation can lead to even more severe symptoms such as depression, anxiety, and increased risk for cardiovascular disease. That is why my program will focus on decreasing loneliness and social isolation through horticultural therapy, which is therapy through gardening. I have chosen this method because it sounds like a fun activity, and maybe one that is not as common among the elderly. I would like to focus my population specifically to those who are in assisted living facilities, or nursing homes. A review of the literature states that gardening can be beneficial to the elderly by improving their sleep, agitation, and cognition in dementia

Isolation influences social determinants of health through long travel distances to and/or limited availability of services, including health and social services and limited availability of medical professionals and specialists with often increased waiting times (Bourke et al., 2010; Dunbar & Peach, 2012). There are less options for education and employment as well high costs for goods and services, due to increased transport distances (Bourke et al., 2010). Environmental determinants come in the form of the limited quality of housing available, lack of recreational facilities, difficulties with waste disposal and sanitation, low water quality, being more likely to work in hazardous industries and experiencing natural hazards such as flooding…

This number is drastically lower than the number of elderly people living in nursing homes that have depression. Part of the cause of nursing home depression is that many residents feel as if they have no one to talk to about their problems and concerns. They often feel lonely and begin to ruminate on their self worth due to a lack of hobbies and meaningful relationships which ultimately leads to depression (Gan 1). Studies have shown that social interaction can help to reduce depression like symptoms in elderly residents. Weiss’ developed a social support theory that consisted of six different types of social interactions that could potentially help lessen these negative feelings nursing home residents were experiencing (Dragesey 873).…

Edward Said substantiates the effects of exile and isolation on a person and the paradox that arises between the different outcomes it can have on a person’s social development. Being separated- physically or emotionally- from one’s place of origin or the people who inhabit a similar region can create an “unhealable rift” but also give rise to an “enriching experience” where those involved will develop and acquire notable traits they otherwise would not have. This is best exemplified in the character John the Savage in Aldous Huxley’s “ Brave New World.” John found himself in a constant state of exile from both his home in Malpais and in London, where he was relocated. Because of his social isolation, John has not been exposed to the unique…

There are several theories that emphasize the role of race and class preferences in defining the level of school segregation when choice is given. One theory hypothesizes that school choice programs will increase segregation by making it easier for white and families with advantages to avoid schools with high concentrations of minority or other disadvantaged students. This theory to avoid groups of the opposite race is known as the outgroup avoidance theory or “white flight” in reference to school desegregation. (Saporito 2003). A second theory, which also implies that school choice will increase segregation, suggests that parents of all races seek out educational environments in which their children can be with students of similar backgrounds.…

Consequently the focus is not on the disconnect to the final product (Pappenheim, 1959). This is perhaps the most straightforward way in which our species being is being violated. As has been outlined, capitalism creates specialisation, the mechanisation of the human. What defines prosperity under Marxism is the opposite.…
