Social Intervention Paper

This paper highlights possible intervention strategies to increase social skills in one high-functioning student with autism. “Billy” was observed in six 45-minute periods in a middle school self-contained 12:1:1 classroom setting. He was observed during his science class and data was recorded based on an antecedent, behavior and consequence data scale and an informal interview with the student. Billy’s behavior includes vocal outbursts and speaking in accents, awkward social relationships and inappropriate responses. This behavior was noted by his teachers and the observer and will hopefully decrease using a social skills peer-mediated training intervention. Positive social skills and appropriate responses are important to making and maintaining friendships when Billy enters high school. This paper also references multiple bodies of autism research, an informal interview with Billy and a review of recent literature from adults on the spectrum.

Because social-communicative deficits are so common among the autistic population, these skills must be highlighted and specifically targeted in an intervention setting to lessen those anxieties and stereotypical social behaviors over time. Addressing these skills early on can lead to normal social relationships and responses that can only benefit the individual in their adult professional and social life. Higher-functioning children with autism can benefit most from a peer-mediated model because they already have the beginning skills needed for appropriate social relationships.
