Because social-communicative deficits are so common among the autistic population, these skills must be highlighted and specifically targeted in an intervention setting to lessen those anxieties and stereotypical social behaviors over time. Addressing these skills early on can lead to normal social relationships and responses that can only benefit the individual in their adult professional and social life. Higher-functioning children with autism can benefit most from a peer-mediated model because they already have the beginning skills needed for appropriate social relationships.
