The United States is known to have one of the best education systems in the world and for that reason many students come here with the goal of pursing a higher education. With minorities slowly becoming the majority, social integration is playing a big role in today’s society, especially for college students. According to a Washington Monthly article, between 1997 and 2007, the US campuses total minority enrollment grew by 52%. (Luzer, 2010) It is said that being socially integrated leads to academic success and a good social health. According to a study conducted in Auburn University, they stated “social integration ranks as the primary agent in assessing and defining the quality of education among underrepresented college students.” But are college students today doing a good job in socially integrating?
Many factors affect social integration and academic success. Some are socially and others of resiliency. San Francisco is known to be a very diverse city. Students from every race and background come to the universities and are affected by being underrepresented and have trouble succeeding in college due to the lack of health.
