Social institutions are a key element to the structure of societies. They consist of people who came together for a common purpose, and are part of the social order of society. They set an example of what the behavior and expectations are for individuals in society. Having these institutions help decrease chaos and increase structure. Each institution involves different things, but is important part of our daily life. Education is a major social institution that impacts the lives of many people. In the past, the education system had a manifest function. This means that any function of an institution is planned and intentional. The only thing that the education system did was teach academics and skills need for day to day life. Recently, it has turned into a latent function. The latent function is any function of an institution that is unintentional and unrecognized. Some examples are providing medical care, nutrition, discipline, personal hygiene, and mental health care. The education system as an institution provides many kids with everything they need for their daily life.
