Throughout history, there have been countless cases demonstrating the social injustice in health care. Cases such as, the Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment validates how unethical and unscrupulous physicians can become, all in the name of science. Furthermore, social injustice in health care exists if there is a preventable difference in health states among a population of people; and in Macon, Alabama, syphilis marked that difference.
As I learned about the Tuskegee Experiment, I realized that, in general, there were many flaws in Health Care and that there was a disparity between the poor and those of color and the wealthy. The underprivileged had a difficult time obtaining basic health care and access to preventative health programs. If programs were implemented, it could have decreased the number of cases of syphilis in impoverished communities. In order for there to be fairness and equality in health care, everyone must have adequate and equal access to what they need to live a healthy life style. During the progression of experiment, it was discovered that penicillin could cure syphilis; however, the participants were denied penicillin and having access to medical treatment. To make matters worse, the physicians in the study made sure that they did not receive any medical help from other physicians because they wanted to continue observing the course of syphilis. I believe that there was a lack regulation and safety when it came to conducting medical research on people.
The physicians in the study behaved not only in an unethical and unprofessional manner but, they attempted to justify their actions. The physicians, nurses, and people associated with the experiment were very deceitful and did not worry about the participants’ overall health. The men only complied to take part of the experiment because they believed they were going to be treated for their syphilis; however, the physicians had no plan to do
