Social workers are the protectors, supporters and enforcers of social justice. This profession values the need for equality and establishes methods to intervene with individuals or groups of people who face injustice. Many theorists have defended different definitions of social justice primarily classifying them into “libertarianism, utilitarianism, and egalitarianism”. The libertarian theory of justice puts emphasis on the aspects of attaining individual liberty or freedom to gain social justice. The utilitarian theory of social justice is defined when the majority of the population has their needs met, although making it acceptable if some had more than others. According to DuBois, “Societal isms are the prejudicial attitudes directed against groups that society identifies as “lesser”—less capable, less productive, and less normal” (DuBois 137). A particular group of concern is the elderly who face discrimination because they are perceived as incompatible as they age. Ageism can be portrayed as being ,“directed at the older generation, it reduces their ability to contribute to the community at large, fosters stereotyping that makes it difficult to view older adults as individual people, encourages older adults to devalue themselves, and perpetuates a fear of aging” (DuBois 142). The population of elderly in our society fears aging because of the discriminating views that devalue their age group and segregate them from the rest of society. The federal government has put in place many laws to prevent discrimination in the elderly population. One of many laws is called the “Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967” which applies to anyone over the age of 40 making sure their terms of employment aren’t lost due to age or are being harassed in the working environment (EEOC). Helping filing a charge against an employer can be the job of a social worker who can guide and counsel the victim of an offense through the process. This type of legislative action can implement change in an elderly’s life and can be a difficult process to go through.
