In elementary school, we learned about the American Revolution and the fight for freedom and equality against the British. We learned about the Civil War and the freedom of slaves. We learned about the Industrial Revolution and how people immigrated over to America from Europe and found a better life. We learned about the Civil Rights movement and how the abolishment or Jim Crow lead to the equality of black and white people.…

America is an immensely diverse nation; built on the ideals of the ‘Land of the Free’ and ‘Home of the Brave’. The United States is also known as the Land of Opportunity, but how true do the statements ring for all of its citizens? Civil rights movements, within the United States, have made large milestone victories since the early to mid-1960s; changes and implemented laws and policies have since guided a movement of appeared equality. How is it then, with this appeared movement of equality, that the United States penal system has become so overwhelmed and disproportioned in the representation of its races? Racial disparities between Non-Hispanic Whites, Non-Hispanic Blacks, and Hispanics, within the penal system, have become increasingly more concerning.…

The wealth gap in the United States, while staggering, did not strike me as completely unexpected. In discussing this with my family and friends, I found that many of them frowned upon the redistribution of wealth, citing socialism, communism, and any number of ‘-isms’ that have been brought up as alternatives to capitalist society.…
