Society tends to be divided into upper and lower class, based on how much overall income one’s family makes. Social inequality has caused a decrease in overall monetary gain because children from families of lower economic class cannot afford the education necessary for better jobs. Therefore, younger generations are essentially “stuck” with what their parents had. This is similar to ancient times, when the social pyramid was used. If your parents were slaves, so were you, and if your parents were royalty, you were too. In some cases, people are even identified by their financial situations. Poor people are often considered to be more troublesome, while rich people are more likely to be spoiled and egotistical. In addition, certain groups of people, usually groups of color, are discriminated due to their finances. People of color are less likely to receive better jobs if they are low class, which has an impact on their income. The problem with racism is that even though older people who may or may not have been racist die out, the newer incoming generations of people will fill their role. Racism is always there, whether we like it or not. Modern examples include bombings, lynchings, and of course segregation,and one particular effect of racism is unfair sentencing. It has been shown that African American teens are more likely to be sentenced to life without parole than white teens when they have committed the same crime. Also, students of color are more likely to be given harsher punishments such as expulsion than white students, even if they did nothing more. This is clearly unfair, and the issue persists to this day. One final piece of information I found interesting was that Latinos have been found to be the most likely to be high school dropouts and eventually criminals. As a result, the justice system saves around $38,000 for every Latino that actually receives their high school diploma.
