While I have not yet fully experienced social mobility myself, I was able to greatly connect to this topic. One of the terms mentioned structural mobility, which is defined as the movement up or down the social class ladder that is due more to changes in the structure of society than to the actions of the individuals. My father was able to experience this after the events of 9/11, because he lost his job in aviation. After 9/11, there was not a very high demand for pilots, so many lost their jobs and getting into the aviation field was very difficult and competitive. Over the past week, I attended a summer camp for aviation in which I was able to meet and talk to several pilots who work for airlines. I was able to learn that pilots are in a high demand at the moment and this demand is only going to increase as senior pilots must retire. This means that there is less competition for jobs, greater chances of getting hired, and higher wages in which they get paid. Once being eligible for these jobs in a few years, I will be able to move from my current social class (hopefully moving up) due to the changes in society that causes a higher demand in pilots. Whether upward or downward movement, I will experience intergenerational mobility, as they will remain in the lower middle class.
