Reflective Essay: The Legal Implications Of Suspension

Improved Essays
Prior to this whole ordeal happening, I had a slightest sense of which direction my life was headed in. I say “slightest” because no one in the world really has any idea which direction their lives may be going towards, it is the mere idea that we may have some semblance of control over our lives that gives us comfort. After my accident happened, this notion of having any clue where my life was headed completely disappeared. What is left in its place is just doubt and uncertainty. This is what being suspended would have contributed towards. Being suspended is what the word itself means, you are suspended in limbo, and while everyone else is progressing forward you are in a position of not knowing what is happening at Babson and unable to make …show more content…
The legal implications I am facing have already put a huge dampener on the progression of my life and suspension would only further delay the progression of my already delayed life. Overall, suspension would have created a fissure between the college and me. It would be impossible to say what sort of reaction I would have experienced towards it but I can give good insight into it as there was a point during the review process where I was almost sure I was going to be suspended for following my lawyer’s advice. I would like to take time to discuss now how much I appreciate and respect your understanding during this whole process. I completely understand that you could have gone the easy route and just suspended me after our first meeting but the understanding and compassion you showed is something that I wish to shout out and ensure that it definitely was not overlooked. I completely understand that you did everything within your locust of control to ensure that I would not get suspended, and I thank you for …show more content…
Upon being suspended, I would no longer be able to be on campus, therefore I would be unable to see any of my friends unless they either lived off campus or we met somewhere off campus. This would mean I would be inconveniencing them every time we hung out. I could foresee that repeatedly inconveniences would eventually result in them not being as willing to hang out as much. Despite being my friends, that is a perfect understandable and reasonable excuse for not wanting to see me as much. As a result, I can see this suspension having some huge implications socially as well. I would likely become distanced from my existing friends during the semester and it would be impossible to say if any of those bonds could be fully repaired the following semester when I am allowed to be integrated back into the college

In Chicago, there were 368 suspensions of kindergartners, also down from the previous year but up significantly from two years prior. Parents such as Williams and a number of child development experts say suspension should be an absolute last resort for all school-aged students and there ought to be an outright ban on such discipline for children in preschool through second grade. Suspension can increase the likelihood of a student dropping out of high school and the punishments disproportionately target African-Americans and children with disabilities, critics…

Intermediate Sanctions are new punishments developed to fill in the gaps between traditional probation and traditional jail or prison (Schmalleger & Smykla, 2015). Intermediate sanctions better match the severity of punishment to the seriousness of the crime. Intermediate sanctions were started in the 1980’s to respond to increased convicted offenders and widescale over population. Prior to intermediate sanctions, options were limited to incarceration or probation with the sentences being too hard or too soft for the crimes the offenders were being convicted of. Some of the intermediate sanctions that were started are boot camps, drug court, remote-location monitoring, and day fines.…

To counter this, the founding fathers developed a system of checks and balances that directly includes the people. My grades this past year were and are not indicative of who I am as a student, or as a person in general. My junior year of high school, I decided to do PSEO, thinking it was an easy way to get credits for both high school and college. I did not realize the struggle I was going to have just trying to be accountable for myself during my senior year. My daily schedule consisted of work, soccer, managing the high school boy’s hockey team, volunteer work, spending time with my high school friends and taking college courses. I took the most challenging classes through Anoka-Ramsey Community College, thinking that like high school these would be the best for me.…

It’s a Constitutional Right Gun control is an action taken by the government that controls the purchasing, selling, and use of handguns by citizens in the United States. The right to own a gun has become a big controversy amongst the United States. Although some people claim that guns are harmful and lead to many deaths, guns should not be restricted because doing so would go against the second amendment, and it would make it harder for civilians to defend themselves if needed. Prohibiting guns would fail in preventing criminals from getting weapons because they are already obtaining them illegally; therefore, disposing of guns would give the criminals of America a greater advantage against the unarmed civilians. “If you take guns away from legal gun owners, then the only people who would have guns would be the bad guys” (Bruce Willis).…

In the last 40 years, incarceration in the United States has reached epidemic proportions. We have the highest incarceration rate in the world; we hold 5% of the world’s population, but house 25% of the world’s prisoners (Kelly 2015). The use of incarceration has gradually become a more acceptable and more used form of punishment. As a result, our prison population is overflowing with offenders ranging from petty theft criminals to violent offenders. As cited in the textbook, purposes of our justice system should be retribution, deterrence, incapacitation, and rehabilitation, (Clear, Reisig, & Cole 2016, p.72-73) but we focus far too much on punishment first and rehabilitation second, if ever.…
