Macau is a small city based at the mouth of the Pearl River Delta in southwest China, which is often called the “Las Vegas of the Orient” (Kong et al., 2015); for its 36 casinos that have contributed $44.1 billion in gaming revenue which is 7 times the annual gaming revenue income in Las Vegas (Greenwood et al., 2014). Consequently, the legalization of gambling in 1847, Macau has been the lead of the gambling industry in Asian casinos (Wan, 2012), it was not until 2001 that the government in Macau allowed foreign investors to bid on gaming concessions (Chan, 2012). Tourism is a pillar industry within Macau but it only has a day trip market where on average tourists only stay 1.1 days (Macau Tourism Bureau, 2006) whereas Las Vegas average length …show more content…
There are several positive social impacts of gambling in Macau that include higher personal income and government financial power, enhanced public facilities and infrastructure with the accelerated construction of the Light Rail Transit system.

However, there are various negative social impacts of gambling in Macau including, increased social deviations (domestic violence, drug and alcohol abuse, prostitution, etc.), criminal activities, pathological/problem gambling, traffic, decrease in life quality, rise in high school drop-out rates, decline in small business developments, escalation of demands for child protection, marriage counselling, among other social service programs (Long, 1996: Wu & Chen, 2015). The two negative social impacts that I will concentrate on is pathological/problem gambling and the reduction in life
