Social Health

The importance of a social life is not just intended for the young. In fact it is more important for older adults to have a social life compared to the young. Having a social life is not necessarily having a conversation with a friend or two. It is getting out of the house and having fun, being active, and being creative with other people you enjoy being around. For my agency paper I visited the Senior Center of Elk Grove. Although it was stated in the prompt that it was my job to sit in the waiting room and observe for 15 minutes, I instead took a tour. Unfortunately all of the events held that day were over so there was no activity going on in the center. Due to the fact there was nothing to observe, the receptionist took me on an informational tour of what this senior center had to offer. For older adults Ive learned that it is initially their choice of weather they would like to be socially active, but it is also my job as a gerontologist to guide those older adults and support them through different opportunities they could come across. Social health supports my research in the importance of social capital in older adult because it provides some of the same information that I have already found. Some of the recommended actions social health gives talks about providing opportunities for verbal exchange and providing strong social networks. These actions are the exact tools that an older adult needs to be successful in their social
