The aim of this essay is to address the question stated above by analyzing the role of social entrepreneurs and their motives behind choosing that particular entrepreneurial type, in South Africa (a developing country according to the United Nations Statistics, 2017) with the exception of one or two international cases.

The concept of social entrepreneurship is working towards improving the social needs of citizens. Given that it is a big responsibility, social entrepreneurs would be under pressure as they’re dealing with macroeconomic factors such as food and water shortages, and sustainability of resources. For this reason they have to ensure that they hold themselves accountable.
Ideally the motives of social entrepreneurs should correlate with the roles of social entrepreneurs and like the concept of social entrepreneurship, the motives differ and are just as subjective. Some of the motivations of social entrepreneurship identified by Boluk and Mottiar (2014) include group affiliation, recognition and acknowledgment, as well as a genuine passion for addressing socio economic issues.
Group affiliation - There are several networks catered for entrepreneurs (in general) that recognize their work, like the Fair Trade Tourism South Africa, Greenbox that is located in Ireland and specifically for social entrepreneurs the Global Entrepreneurship Network. This is a motivator in that if an enterprise, be it social or commercial, is associated with a well known network, they’re placed at an advantage in the industry as the association adds value to their reputation.
