The ethical dilemma I would like to discuss involved myself and a female customer. This particular customer tried to hand me money as I had bagged and handed her, her paid for items. According to the customer, God told her to bless me, so she wanted me to take the money. During this time, I began to experience feelings of confusion as thoughts clouded my mind. The first thing I thought was that I could really use the money since I did not have any at the time. My second thought brought about the confusion because it just so happens that I am a Christian as well as the lady, so, in my head, I wondered if God was really sending a blessing my way, and not to mention, the randomness of it all really swayed my belief. However, despite all of the thoughts, of taking the money, I automatically knew that it was against my job’s Code of Ethics to receive money or tips from any customer. With that being said, I refused to accept the lady’s offer of cash, explaining to her that accepting the offer would be unethical. I knew that no matter how bad I needed the money, it would be unethical for me to take the lady’s offer, and furthermore, I could lose my job. I would always go down to her house to play outside sometimes, and inside her house other times. Julie’s household consisted of herself, two brothers, one sister and only her mother. After spending time at Julie’s house, I realized that Haitians are actually very amazingly unique. This experience played a role in strengthening my multicultural awareness. The skill of multicultural awareness and diversity will be very important in the social work profession as it can greatly impact the relationship between myself and other clients. Rather than rude, obnoxious, and weird, I learned that Haitians naturally speak loud and they mean no harm by their prolonged eye contact. I also learned that they deeply value family and friends, which can explain why my neighbors would often have company over.
