When associated with deviance tattoos and piercing and other body modifications fall into a spectrum rather than a simple yes or no answer. People with excessive tattooing are more likely to be criminal. Having excessive tattoo can impact a person life in a negative way. Over time the deviance of tattoos and piercings has changed from a nominal yes or no to a spectrum that encompasses all levels of tattooing and piercings and other body modifications. Tattoos and piercing have the own level of primary deviance, small norms violations that elicit frowns or glares as punishment, and secondary deviance, harsh sanctions shunning or avoidance of a person (Lemert, 1951). Primary deviance occur when a person a tattoo that is visible that obscene, such as nudity, or on a body part like the head and face or if covers an entire arm or leg. Secondary deviance for tattoos occurs when the person is covered in tattoos, they have more tattoo ink showing than there is skin showing. Examples of this are lizard man or Stalking Cat. Both of these people have excessive tattooing with lizard trying to look like a bright green lizard and Stalking Cat making himself look as much like a tiger as possible. People will go out of their way to avoid being around them if possible, which puts them at the level of secondary deviance. There are two categories of implantation that will be examined for deviance, breast implants and sub-dermal implants, like horns. Breast implants are not viewed as deviant until they cause breast to reach a certain size that those who view them think that they are too big. Sub dermal implant are viewed as deviant because most people do not think people should have horns or other types of objects protruding from their skin.
