Social norms and values guide what we say and do and determine whether these actions that are chosen are acceptable but what happens when this guide is not followed? Two social media posts will be analysed to answer this question and provide a in depth look at what norms or values were broken and how social deviance perspectives can explain these acts of deviance. Additionally, the impact of labelling in these cases of social deviance and how the label assigned directs societies view of the said deviance. Labelling is the reaction to explain or interoperate actions of others, the label is dependent on who performs the action and if it is acceptable or not (Anieu, 2014). The term feminist is traditionally applied to women and its meaning is highly variably depending on the use of the word and by who is using the word. The first social media post that will be analysed is a post by Lost Pin up that is a non-traditional view of feminism (2016). The social media post shows a man in a shirt with the label feminist on it, with the title “Men Who Are Actually Feminists Talk About What Feminism Means To Them”(Lost Pin up, 2016). This post is widely debated in the comments in regards to the meaning of the label and the breaking from the traditional view. The norm that has been broken in some individual’s opinions is the traditional view of feminism, which traditionally is seen as women fighting against inequality between the genders. This post breaks this norm of the traditional view of feminist as this is males standing for equality between the genders. This break in the norm can be seen in the social interaction engaged in after the post for example “Oh, so now men are identifying as feminists? Hysterical”(Betty Blakley, September 14 ) (Lost Pin up, 2016).
