Introduction
Heart disease is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in Australian women (Crouch & Wilson, 2011) and is found to be highest for populations living in remote rural regions of South Australia (SA Atlas, 2015). This paper analyses the patterns and trends in this population group and the different social determinants and lifestyle behaviours that can affect women’s health.
Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in Australia (AIHW, 2007 report) and has the following definitions:

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) for menopausal and postmenopausal women may have benefits in reducing risk of CVD under the care of an endocrine specialist or physician (GP) which is discussed by Ford (2014) and more information is available on the Heart Foundation website (2015).

“The social determinants of health are the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age”. (WHO, 2013, para. 6) Social and economic conditions and their effects on people’s lives determine their risk of illness and the actions taken to prevent them becoming ill or treat illness when it occurs.
