Otago. Otago is an exercise program that involves improving strength, balance and gait. The program involves 17 exercises that vary in difficulty. The exercises include shoulder rolls, marching in place, calf raises, knee bends, sit to stand, calf stretches and other similar exercises. The exercises can also be increased in difficulty by adding weights. The first day of the program, the physical therapist assesses the patient for tolerance to exercise and adjusts the program and speed based on the patient individual situation (Liston, 2014). The program involves walking therapy but not until the 5th week and the patient has shown the ability to tolerate walking. Social dancing has recently been established as an effective method of decreasing falls within the elderly population (Merom, Cumming, Mathieu, Anstey, Rissel, Simpson, & Lord, 2013). Social dancing was shown to decrease fall rates by 23% when actively participating for 4 hours a week. The benefits were not also found in fall prevention however results also showed a 35% decrease in dementia onset. The patients were also found to have depression symptoms relieved and the fears of sustaining another fall were greatly diminished. The patients overall had a better gait and increased balance and showed an increase in maintaining the dance regiment. Many of the patients claimed to continue the dance regiment because it was fun and had become part of the patient's social life. The patients claimed the program was an outlet to also discuss socially the impact of various illness and the experience each had from previous falls (Merom et al., 2013). Integrating QSEN into fall prevention is very important as falls is a primary safety concern. As nurses, it is important to have in place all falls precautions requirements within the clinical setting. Knowing why these precautions are in place allow us to understand the importance and to establish a safe clinical setting. QSEN is the educational understanding of why something is being done by the nurse (Dolansky & Moore, 2013). The QSEN initiative is the developing of quality and safety competencies so as to serve as a resource to integrate quality and safety into the nurses
