Th Gift of Social Dance
Social Dance has opened my eyes to the different possibilities of how dance can make people feel. I was very timid and cautious about this class for I did not know what I was expecting. I joined the class because my roommate did not want to do it alone, and it would be something different and out of my comfort spot. However, I am actually very pleased with the overall outcome that came from this experience from the various types of dances, having new partners each day, and the phenomenon interesting social and dance labs.
I originally thought that the ballroom only consists of one type of dance called the waltz. I was by far amazed at the different variations of the Waltz, swing, and two steps. Before the class, I could not see myself doing any ballroom dance beside salsa and bachata. However, I saw myself very intrigued and enjoying-oddly-the Waltz. Now, when I think of the Waltz, I think of the cliché Disney scenes at the end of the movie that I so adored as a child. Sometimes I even prefer the Waltz instead of the swing because how peaceful, graceful, and the most serene feeling that I get when I dance with a partner. I think it is very interesting also to dance with a new partner throughout the day especially since I am very shy.

Unfortunately, due to my very busy schedule and rigorous courses, I was only able to go to two social outing: the country two-step and the salsa one. I by far love the salsa one because I danced with majority students who were in dance class, so I was comfortable with making mistakes and learning from them. I was by far shocked at the end of how sensual salsa, Kuzi, and other Latin dances were. I would love to take more classes in that because it would be out of my comfort zone and allow me to learn how to truly trust my partner. I am so thankful for both instructors on how simple, step-by-step instructions that they

The dance itself provides two people to dance together, and requires social communication through speaking, body language, symbols. At the beginning of the class, I did not know how to distinguish the different type of dances that are under the umbrella of ballroom dance. However, I slowly picked up on the different dances: Foxtrot, Swing, Hustle, Waltz, etc., and can now distinguished the differences and unique styles of each dance. If someone talked to me about ballroom dance, I would have little insight or knowledge about the subject matter because I never really learned about it or had practical experience myself. Now, I can at least talk about ballroom dance at the novice level, and have an appreciation for the dance…

    Dance Theatre Observation

I chose to attend the University Dance Theatre rehearsal because I really admire contemporary dance and wanted to watch what the dancers do “behind the scenes,” so to speak. I wanted to better understand the work that goes into the dances instead of just viewing the final piece, which I often do. I chose to watch a Ballet 1 technique class because ballet is a form of dance that I appreciate but never really understood and because ballet contrasts the modern dance rehearsal I viewed. I’ve always believed that ballet was too proper and structured for my liking and represented the human body in a very fake way, too posed and upright. I wanted to watch a class that challenged my beliefs and while I still don’t think ballet is the most enjoyable…

This was the most enjoyable part of dance because it was a way of meeting others students outside of the class room that enjoyed dance just as much as I do. I was also able to see different variety of dance. For example, during the show this year there was a group that did an African dance. This gave me a new perspective of dance abacus the movements looked very mellow but still energetic. It shows me that dance does not solely have to be of one energy level.…

I am glad we have spent a morning refreshing our memories of each of the five styles, but how long will that last? I have a plethora of weddings to attend in the coming year. If I am not regularly exposing myself to the dances, then I am not certain in my power to recall them come next summer. Another issue I would run into is finding a suitable dance partner. It has been easy for us to dance with our classmates since everyone should have a basic understanding of each style.…

Dance is a non-threatening, non-competitive way to challenge participants to improve physical skills and artistic expression. The abundance of research shows the benefits of physical activity in general, and dance, in particular. The idea of integrating the arts, including dance, into the broader curriculum is not new but appears to be achieving a stronger foothold in public schools today. Dance is an artistic form of expression where bodily activities are used to convey any inner thoughts and feelings, emphasize creativity, solve problems, express emotions and more (Dimondstein 5).…

The formation of dance has lived on this world for many generations as we continue to pass through history. When I went to the wonderful performance at Pierce College I experienced a whole new perspective on dancing. The concert had many types of students performing mixed dance projects of all types like solos and duets. There was an average size of one to eight dancers per project which made it the ideal size for the concert. I really enjoyed the creativity and effort put into this performance.…

Once I felt somewhat confident in my ability to do the box step, I transitioned into the giant circle surfacing the room. Everyone stood in a circle, females on the inside, males on the outside. This is when I noticed that gender plays a specific role in ballroom dance. The instructors teaching the social dance class made sure that the females always danced with the males and this was ensured by having the females rotate in the inner circle while the males stood in their position on the outer circle. That way, every female always danced with a new male.…
