The definition of social cost can vary from person to person. But my definition of social cost would be cost that society pays to deter future acts of crime. In other words what an individual/society would pay to maintain safety. This would include anything that a neighborhood may pay for the safety of everyone. As a whole society will stick together to fight crime. No one wants to be a victim of a crime and therefore will try to prevent it. Economic cost is on the inside spectrum of crime. Things that would be included in economic cost may include: incarceration of an individual, prosecution, arrest cost and financial losses. Every time a person commits a crime and gets arrested money is being lost. It takes a lot of money to incarcerate and individual. According to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons, the average annual cost of incarceration in Federal prisons in 2010 was $28,284 per inmate.
